What is COPAIA?

The Pan American Commission for Food Safety (COPAIA) was created in 2001 from a proposal sal submitted by the delegation of the Brazil and adopted by the Ministers of Health and Agriculture of the Americas at 12ª Inter American Ministerial Meeting on Health and Agriculture (RIMSA 12).

The first meeting with the creation of the COPAIA was held on 4 May 2001 and since then 6 Regular Meetings have been held. 
.
The fundamental purpose of the COPAIA is the contribute to improving the safety of food at all chain food through the maintenance of the political will of the countries of the Region for the Organization of programs of food safety and the promotion of coordination and integration with the producers and consumers.
To succeed this Commission is composed of the Ministers of Health and Agriculture, and representatives of consumers and producers of food of the Americas of the following subregions: North America, Andean, Caribbean, Central America and Latin Caribbean and Southern Cone.

The Commission develops the following lines of action: promotion of intersectoral coordination, the strengthening of systems of food safety, the development of policies for the modernization of the health inspection of food, the promotion of integrated system of surveillance of the foodborne diseases, the development of strategic alliances in education and social communication in food safety, and the promotion of the participation of the countries of the Region in the work of the Codex Alimentarius.
